Tips for Teaching New Drivers
Let them drive - Six hours of instruction during Driver's Ed is not enough. If your teen is in the car, they should be driving.
Be a role model - Children imitate their parents. If you want them to follow the rules of the road, you should as well.
Put the distractions away - Turn off the in-car distractions such as GPS. Put your phone away and set it on silent.
Keep instructions simple and concise
Let them drive under various conditions - Nighttime, rain, snow, heavy traffic
Be patient and alert
Remain calm - When your teen makes a mistake, which will happen often, don't yell or criticize. Repeat the maneuver until they improve and help them understand that everyone makes mistakes.
Iowa has a graduated driver’s license system for drivers under age 18. A student who is at least 14 years old must first obtain an Instruction Permit and then take and pass a certified driver's education course to include 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and observe for 6 hours in a vehicle with a certified instructor. When a student is at least 14 1/2 years old and held their instruction permit for a minimum of 6 months, they may obtain a Minor School License. Students may obtain an Intermediate License when they are 16 years of age and have held their instruction permit (or instruction permit and minor school license) for a minimum of 12 months.
Iowa’s graduated driver's license program requires at least 20 hours of supervised driving to advance from an instruction permit to an intermediate license, and 10 more hours to advance to a full license.
