FCC Rules Part 97.3(a)(4): "Amateur service: A radio communication service for the purpose of self-training, intercommunication and technical investigations carried out by amateurs, that is, duly authorized persons interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without pecuniary interest."
I've been licensed since 1990. My station contains an Icom IC-7300 and an Icom IC-703 with a 41-foot end-fed long wire antenna hidden in my roof ridge vent. It works well for a compromise antenna, and is completely invisible except for the unun box. I'm also active on 2m and 1.25m and have several Baofeng HTs. On 2m I use a homemade ground plane antenna hanging in my garage. I also occassionally use a 2m beam antenna that I made using tape measure elements.
